Frequently Asked Questions » Twitter Basics
Q. How do I send a message to someone that is not following me?

A. If a Twitter user is not following you, you cannot send him or her a direct message, so you must send that user a public reply.  This is done bt starting  your tweet with the "@" symbol, then the user's Twitter name.  Enter a space, then your message.

Example:

@thepodcast You guys are the greatest in the world, I love you dearly.

We will see this when we check our "mentions" in Twitter, we will see this message.

Note: Technically, you don't need to start the message with the nickname - it can be anywhere in the tweet.

So if I reply to a public comment from ladygaga for instance it is possible that she will see it? I am not sure I understand...

Dave, it is unlikely that someone as large as ladygaga would see it directly, or indirectly, because this is a common tactic. Plus, she probably has a staff member manage her twitter account, it is unlikely she does more than step into it every now and then.

a hint, if you type in:

. @ladygaga

As I understand it thus far this will send it to everyone following @ladygaga. In the case of @repiles in general, on my main account, still small by comparison to many, with close to 10K followers it puts me in the top 1% of Twitter users. As well, I check my @ replies daily. The timeline feature is over 1K an hour on an average day, and the DM are around 500 to greater than 1K a day, so its impossible for me to keep up at this level. However, my @replies are still reasonable by comparison and typically 100-250 a day, so I can manage those.

I was watching Sanjay Gupta on CNN and he said to send comments to @sanjayguptaCNN. I tried to send a comment starting with @sanjayguptaCNN, but it would not work because he is not a follower of me (no duh). Why is this so difficult?

Why do people say "Send us a message on twitter" at ..... if I can't sed to someone not following me. This seems dumb. It should be simpler

Ahh well almost everytime you use a mention and type to someone, they never reply back to you, twitter should fix it and make the messaging like facebooks..I understand the because of spamming etc,but its a private message, shud be able to message someone famous u like without them following you, they have so many followers and follow very little, you should be able to message them. it's annoying, half the people make a twitter account to talk to the celebs they like and not many get followed back or messaged..whats the point!

@peter: You can send a mention if you want to reply to direct message!

twitter sucks. you cant send a message to someone who does not follow you. I am not talking about famous people. If you ask a question they are in the same boat they can not answer it.
I just do not get it.

I use to love twitter but now i don't. I didn't know that what y'all call" famous","celebrities" I call them human being does not see my tweets if they are not following me. Such a waste i don't understand y be a fan and support something and u don't exist in there book. I wonder of celebrities had no fans would they still be famous?
