Q. What does "retweet" or "RT" mean and why do people do it?

A. What:

Retweeting is taking a twitter message someone else has posted, and rebroadcasting that same message to your followers*.

Why:

The goal of retweeting is to provide your followers with valuable and/or entertaining content.  Nobody said it all has to be original (just be sure to give credit where credit is due).

How:

  1. Copy and past the orginal tweet in the area where you send your tweets.
  2. Add an "RT:" before the tweet
  3. Next, add the original poster's twitter id in the "@twitter_id" format
  4. optional - add the reason why it is "retweet-worthy" at the end

Example:

Original Tweet: Interview with one of the creators of Twitter! http://bit.ly/DobCk

Your Retweet: RT: @thepodcast Interview with one of the creators of Twitter! http://bit.ly/DobCk - very insightful!

Retweeting is a true win-win for everyone involved.

* Although any Tweet you send will appear in your follower's timelines, they will also appear in the public timeline for anyone to see or pull up in a search.

I'm really confused now though, because if you scroll your mouse over their status thing, it says retweet and when you click it nothing happens :S

Retweet is actually another way to sort of 'thumbs up' their tweet.
