I noticed one of the direct messages (their auto DM) to me from one of my followers was aLOT longer than 140 characters.

How did they do that, at least for the initial "intro-to-me" automatic Direct Message?

Still trying to figure this one out. We have seen a few like this as well, but not sure how folks do it. Joel Comm, author of the book "Twitter Power", is also apparently baffled. None of the reader comments on his recent post about it seem to provide a satisfactory answer:
